In the summer of 2016 there was a violent wind storm resulting in extensive damage.   It is difficult to express the scope of damage though these photographs.  However, overall damages here can be seen in the three photographs immediately below.  Although the tree has since been removed the large stump measuring 6' 7" across at the top, and the extensive damage to both monuments and cast iron fences remains.   Some of the monuments are very large and require special equipment and trained personnel to restore them.  Contrary to what many people presume, monuments are the property of those who purchased them and damages are covered neither by the cemetery nor the city. The Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery strive to raise funds to restore, repair and otherwise maintain this historic site. As you scroll through these images perhaps you will see a monument that is especially important to you. If you would like to help in this restoration then either make a monetary contribution through the Donate page or reach out to us though one of the contact methods listed at the bottom of this page.

Sincerely,

The Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery
